Gunther who?

First off, click here to see the updated FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about the Essentials of Travel Photography Workshop, or just scroll down to the next post. Take some time to read through the FAQs. Did you read the whole thing? If not, go back and read through the entire post. Now think about other questions you might have about the worshop and post them here so we can answer them.

Now that you know what the workshop is all about, it's time to answer the next obvious question: Who is Gunther Deichmann and why would I spend my hard-earned money to enroll in his class?

Gunther was born in Germany and traveled to Australia in his early 20s to work as a geology assistant. He traveled extensively across the Australian Outback. It was his desire to capture nature's beauty that led him to photography. A few years later, he shifted careers from geology to the colorful world of photography. Over 30 years after starting his career in photography, he is even more passionate about his craft than when he first started. In fact, he is so passionate about it that he unselfishly shares what he knows to his willing students. Click here to see what his website says about him.

GD's images have graced the covers of international publications including Time Magazine and Discovery. Click here to see other magazines where GD's images have been featured.

In 2006, GD published a coffeetable book called Journey Through Color and Time. The book contains page after page of jawdropping photographic perfection. It’s a compilation of over 300 pages containing images taken throughout his 30-year career, covering around 22 countries including the Philippines. Each page is just bursting with color. Click here to see high resolution images from his book.

Gunther Deichmann is not just an accomplished photographer. He is also a well-respected photography instructor. He conducts photography and Aperture (Apple's photo management software) workshops throughout the year and across different countries. Click here to see his workshop calendar and here to read about what past students say about him.

Visit Gunther Deichmann's blog to read about his adventures as he shares his passion for photography. It's a very informative and entertaining read. And lots of images to inspire and bring out the photographer in you.

On October 23-24, Gunther will be a speaker in One Asia Festival to be held in Singapore. He is among the roster of photographers and videographers who will give a talk on Images of Asia which will "showcase the wonders of the continent through galleries and screenings, both still photography and film". He will also be among the judges in the Asia Without Borders Photo Competition brought to you by Asian Geographic.

Hopefully, learning more about Gunther Deichmann will get you excited about the upcoming Essentials of Photography Workshop. See you on October 8!

Gunther Deichmann Workshop

The workshop is partially sponsored by Power Mac Center in Greenbelt. Special gifts await participants with the best photos.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Who can join this workshop?

This workshop is open to photography enthusiasts who have basic photography knowledge and who have either a DSLR camera or a point and shoot camera with manual functions (i.e. can set the ISO, shutter speed and aperture manually). It is important for the participant to know the controls of his/her camera so as not to inconvenience the instructor(s) or other participants with questions on camera controls.

2. How much is the workshop fee?

The workshop fee is P1,500 inclusive of lunch and beverages throughout the day. A non-refundable but transferable reservation fee of P500 is required to register. Due to the limited slots, only paid reservations are considered confirmed slots.

3. How do I register and pay?

Visit the WWCF Photography Club Table at the back portion of the sanctuary to register. Full Payment or reservation fees will be accepted starting September 26 at the 8am, 10am, 2pm and 4:30pm services. Please give your full name, contact number, and email address (if you have one) so we can reach you for any workshop-related announcements. You may give your payment to any of the following Photography Club members: Rein Tienzo, Jay Lim, Ralph Rondilla, Abie Lucas, Alby Laran, Tines Villanueva, Ron Nicolas

4. What do I need to bring during the workshop?

On October 8, please bring notebook and pen to take notes. Bring your camera, too. As budding photographers, having our camera with us at all times ensures we don't miss out on photo opportunities.

Things to bring on October 9 will be discussed during the briefing on October 8.

5. What should I expect from this workshop?

October 8: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
  • Registration starts at 6:00pm at the 6F ACCM Building, 102 Valero St., Makati City
  • Briefing for October 9
October 9: 5:00am-9pm
  • 5:00 am - outdoor shoot - location to be announced later
  • 10:00 am - assemble back at the 6F ACCM Building, 102 Valero St., Makati City for photo processing and discussion
  • 3:00 pm - location shoot  - location to be announced later6:00 pm - assemble back at the 6F ACCM Building, 102 Valero St., Makati City for photo processing and discussion
It will be a long day but it will be fun and exciting!

6. How do we travel from one location to the other?

Transportation is not covered by the workshop fee. Carpooling among participants is encouraged. Alternatively, participants may share a cab going to and from the locations.

7. Can I just walk in during the workshop itself?

There is a limited number of slots available for the class and they are filling up fast. Once the number of slots have been filled up, we will no longer accept sign ups. It is unlikely that slots will still be available on the day of the workshop itself. We encourage interested individuals to sign up and pay the reservation fee as soon as possible to secure a slot in the class.

8. What happens if I cannot make it to the workshop and I've already paid?

The reservation fee is non-refundable but transferable. This is because the workshop entails cost and some of them are fixed whether we reach the required number of participants or not. If you cannot make it, you may endorse your slot to someone else so you don't forfeit your reservation fee. If you can't make it, please contact us and send us the name and contact details of your replacement.

If you paid in full, you can also endorse your slot to someone else. If you can't find someone else to take your slot, we will reimburse your P1,000 PROVIDED YOU CANCEL NO LATER THAN NOON ON OCTOBER 7. That will give us enough time to find a replacement for your slot. Cancellation later than noontime of October 7 and no show registrants will not be refunded.

9. Can I just attend the Saturday workshop and skip the Friday session?

No. Attending the Friday session is important as Mr. Deichmann will give the workshop introduction and briefing for the early morning shoot the next day. It is important for everyone to come to the morning shoot equipped with the right tools and mindset to tackle the morning task. Since it will be a long day and we are starting very early, we will not waste the time of the instructor as well as the other participants by discussing questions that should have been asked during the briefing session.

10. How many participants are expected? Will there be enough interaction with the instructor?

There are slots for 40 people. Why so many? Well, you will also notice that the workshop fee is the most affordable around. Similar workshops with the same caliber instructor (i.e. Award-winning, well-published in international publications) cost more than double. Mr. Deichmann promises to spend enough time with the participants to ensure that everyone will go home knowing how to take better travel photos. However, while he is committed to spending time interacting with the class, it is also important for each one to do his/her part by paying attention and listening. This is why it is important to come to the workshop with basic knowledge of photography and mastery of your own equipment (see item number 1 in the FAQ).

If you have more questions, please leave a comment on this post and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Check back often for updates.

Thanks,
WWCF Photography Club
